New WordPress Theme

Food Adventure has a new WordPress theme.

For a long time we were on the Magazine Premium theme, until it broke the features I was trying to use. I then reverted to the free Magazine Basic theme, which I was happy with, until I realised it was not displaying comments. It says it hasn’t been updated since 2017, but this appears to be new behaviour to me, which probably means it is linked to the latest WordPress update.

I’m pernickety about my themes, and prefer one that displays an excerpt on the front page. But this one is inoffensive and doesn’t actually break the comments section, so it will do for now, I guess.

  1. Well that theme didn’t last long.

Later the same day I found this one, MH TechMagazine. What I couldn’t get right in the theme options, I managed to fix in CSS.

Many themes these days insist on putting the “index” or “featured” image full size at the head of a post. There are a few things I don’t like about this:

    ○ It moves the post text down the screen, often requiring you to scroll down to read. In my experience if all people see is a picture, they frequently leave without reading.

    ○ If I was creating a new blog with this theme, I might perhaps adapt. But this blog is 7 years old. I have been defining “featured/index” images so they are used by Facebook and any other site using OG:Image. But they are often images I have included within my post… where I want them. So having them show as a full width image at the top of the post kind of spoils my intended layout, and I am not going to go back and re-edit 7 years worth of posts.

Fortunately, the image was sufficiently labelled in the html code that I could kill it with a “display: none” in customer CSS. Also I was able to shrink the sidebar from 33% to 20%
