My “cutting down on food spending in supermarkets” took a big hit today, when I spent over 50 quid on food in the Co-op.
I was actually in their for laundry and cleaning supplies, and goat’s milk, but then I saw that their Pilgrim mature cheddar was half price at 2.14 per 350g pack. Pilgrim is not an exceptional cheese, but it is decent; and I have found that after cold-smoking, the distinction between an expensive cheese and a supermarket cheddar is minimal. The use-by was some time in August, so I bought 10 packs, although I expect to be cold-smoking at least half of that this weekend.
Then I noticed that cornish brie was also reduced – I haven’t tried smoking brie, so I bought some of that too.
Finally, I noticed that the price of their 500ml bottles of olive-oil were slashed. 500ml is an excellent size for rebottling smoked oil, so I bought 4 normal and 2 extra-virgin. I think I will keep the extra-virgin as it is, and smoke the normal.
Astute readers will work out that even that doesn’t all add up to 50 quid. What can I say – I visited the ice-cream aisle as well.
Smoked ice-cream?
And when are you coming to visit/am I coming to visit you? 🙂
Yum!
Was looking at the barbecue over the weekend and thinking it is time to get it running for the summer …
Smoked ice-cream. Interesting concept.
I don’t think I could smoke ice-cream as such. Although you can keep stuff like cheese and butter fresh, even in warm weather, by including an icebath in the smoker; I don’t think ice-cream will stay solid for long enough.
However, I do have a small ice-cream maker. So I wonder what would happen if I smoked one or more of the ingredients before making the ice-cream. Easiest of all would be smoked chocolate chips, but I might also try smoking the milk that is used to make the custard that goes into the ice-cream maker.
I think an experiment is in order.
As for a visit, definitely up for it. Let’s compare diaries some time.
