Iron Horse Ranch House, Market Deeping

Since getting involved with American BBQ, I’ve become more aware of how this style of food is increasing in the UK, both in terms of restaurants such as Barbecoa, and smaller eateries and take-aways. However, I somehow missed one opening in my own town.

P10305251-300x225Opposite my local butcher was a cafe called Harley’s Diner, a UK facsimile of an american diner, and highly decorated with motorbike paraphernalia (the owner is a bike fan). Last year, I noticed it had been refitted and the name changed to the Iron Horse Ranch House, although the owners are the same. But it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that I popped in there for a coffee, while waiting for the butcher to prepare my order.

To my surprise, as well as all-day breakfasts and similar, they also had dishes like beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches on the menu. So today, I headed over there for lunch.

Their brisket sandwich comes in a very nice soft white roll, with the meat piled high inside; served with fries and coleslaw on the side. The brisket was very well prepared, a bit more seasoned than I am used to; but that is more a measure of my own cooking style than theirs – it was still very tasty.

I had a chat with them, and they said all their meat is prepared on site, which means they have a smoker out back somewhere. Someday, I must talk them into letting me have a look at what they have.

Definitely somewhere I will return to again. It gives me a handy place to go to compare with my own efforts, and prices are very reasonable.
